History of the LMHSA

In the early 1990's, L.M.H.S.A. was just a vision of Dick Bennett, a local Hunter sailboat owner. Dick envisioned a helpful association with activities that would appeal to Hunter owners. He sought the assistance of Pugh's Marina in Racine, Wisconsin to form an Association of interested local Hunter owners. Gary Goldstein, representing Pugh's on Erie, joined Dick in a mutual effort to organize such an association. They requested the assistance of Hunter Marine Corporation - and Hunter Marine was happy to assist.

Warren Luhrs (world record sailor and Hunter Marine Corporation CEO) was the guest speaker at the first L.M.H.S.A. meeting held at Pugh's on Erie on March 7, 1992.  Owners of over 30 Hunter sailboats joined the Association at that meeting and a full slate of officers was elected with Dick Bennett serving as our first Commodore.

The new officers went to work creating the framework and organized our first L.M.H.S.A. "in the water" rendezvous at Reefpoint Marine in Racine. It was such a success that the yearly summer rendezvous remains as one of our main activities.

In January of 1995, we held our first winter "out of the water" rendezvous at Rupert's at Second City. The winter rendezvous was continued as a winter social event.

In addition to Racine Riverside Marine (formerly Pugh's) and the Hunter Marine Corporation, we have received support from many in the marine industry including West Marine, Boat/U.S., E&B Marine, Waukegan Port District, North Point Marina, Reefpoint Marine and the Racine Yacht Club, to name a few.
